ABOUT THE CARS Junior Racing League Cars are specially designed half scale late model vehicles that are powered by sealed 9 HP Honda engines. They use a centrifugal clutch for drive. The vehicles are capable of speeds of up to about 100 KPH depending on the track. Typically at Delaware Speedway's inside track they do about 40-50 KPH. The vehicles are surrounded by a full roll cage and fibreglass body that replicates either Chevrolet, Ford or Dodge styles. The chassis are manufactured at JCAR Manufacturing, and the fibreglass bodies are made at Performance Fibreglass in Delaware. SAFETY Each car is equipped with similar safety equipment as used on a full-scale racecar. The cars have a full steel roll-cage, five point safety harness, window nets, rear firewall and an armoured fuel cell. The drivers are required to wear certified fire retardant suits, and snell 2000 helmets as described in the JRL rulebook.
WHY JRL? Racing in the JRL helps to build a young drivers confidence. The program focuses on developing the complete racer. This means that learning takes place not only on the track, but also in the classroom sessions that follow the race. The atmosphere at the program is very family-like, as teams help each other to get the most out of the experience, and to ensure that everyone involved has a fun time! The program has had several graduates that have moved up into other divisions of racing: John Ryan Fitzpatrick Jr. drives the #84 CASCAR Super Series vehicle, and at Delaware Speedway Andrew Perkins drives the #3 Street Stock, Darrell Lake the #77 Street Stock, and Kathleen Hosang the #16 Challenger Motor Freight Truck to name a few. Many other graduates, and current drivers in the league are involved in other areas of racing such as crewing for teams, or being employed in the racing industry. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Used cars range from $5,000* to $6,000*. New cars ready to race are $8,000*. You can expect to spend approximately $500* on safety equipment to get started. Well-maintained used cars typically maintain their value. An annual race budget varies depending on repairs and maintenance schedule.
