Barry Watson (#45) of London won the Transmission Direct Enduro Nationals presented by Demar Aggregates Saturday afternoon at Delaware Speedway. The win is Watson’s first-ever in Transmission Direct Enduro competition. Watson took the lead on lap 53 of the 200-lap race from Piet Blaauboerr (#777) of Strathroy, shortly after previous race leader David McCullough (#39) of Glencoe was involved in a crash. John Lynch (#4) of Blenheim finished second, third was Al Hilton (#114) of Brantford, fouth was Barry Newman (#10) of Springfield, and fifth was Don Goertz (#16) of Arkona. The race was a challenging one for many drivers, with a number of red flags for lost tires and tough crashes. The event also had some extra incentive for drivers with special prizing bonuses from Demar Aggregates and L82 construction.
“[The secret today] was not wrecking!” said Watson in victory lane. “Just take it easy, go slow, get through it, and get back on it.”
Dave Goertz (#15) of Arkona was able to clinch the 2009 Transmission Direct Enduro Championship. The next closest challenger was David McCullough (#39) of Glencoe. His championship hopes came to an end on lap 45 while leading the race. McCullough ran into the back of the stopped #181 of Dean Thomas of Middlemiss. Goertz was also involved in a crash later in the race that took him out of the event, however had developed a substantial points lead by that time.
Heat race winners on the day were Gary Graham (#78) of London and Paul Fothergill (#7) of London.
Red Baron (Dan Mills) of London won the Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Car season finale. The Baron had a nearly perfect run through the challenging “Texas Turn Around” Chaos Course. The race had the special distinction of being the largest race in the history of the two-season old series, with nine drivers making course. Bush Bomb (Spencer Rabideau) of Glencoe was able to seal his bid for the 2009 Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Car championship, becoming the second champion the series has known.
