August 14 & 15 2009

Kirk Hooker's winning outside pass on Rocket Ron Sheridan

Kirk Hooker (#38) of Chatham pulled off his second victory in a row on Friday evening on Exeter Toyota night, after earning his first-ever Delaware Speedway checker flag last week.  Hooker made the winning pass on the outside of eventual second place finisher Rocket Ron Sheridan (#52) of Mt. Brydges on lap five of the 25-lap event.  Third place was Steven Matthews (#15) of New Liskeard.

“I can’t believe this race car, it’s been awesome the last few weeks!” said Hooker in victory lane.  “I just don’t care about the points anymore.  It’s a great race car.  I can’t say enough about my brother Randy and his wife for providing us with this awesome race car.”

Steve Robblee (#28) of Dorchester won the second 25-lap event.  His win secured him the JBM Auto-Leasing Triple Crown championship.  Second was Kirk Hooker (#38) of Chatham and Rocket Ron Sheridan (#52) of Mt. Brydges.  Robblee managed to lead every lap of the race, but in the closing laps was chased closely by Hooker.

“It was the longest four laps of my life!” said Robblee in victory lane.  Sometimes when the car gets out front it looks just that much better.  [Under caution] I kept dreaming there was a miss in the motor or a flat tire, all kinds of greasy stuff.”

Robblee also proved to be fastest in time trials with his 18.888 second lap time.

Rookie driver Stephen Richmond (#24) of Appin won his first-ever POWERADE Open-Wheel Modified feature race on Friday evening.  Richmond took the lead from John Saunders (#70) of London on lap four of the event in a tight inside pass in turn four.  Richmond would lead the remainder of the race being chased by eventual second-place finisher Barry Newman (#1) of Springfield and third-place finisher Jamie Cox (#3) of Dorchester.

“We’ve been working hard for this one,” said Richmond in victory lane.  “The car was great all day today.  Newman just couldn’t get us and it was a great run.  I was really hoping that a caution wouldn’t come out, but it did with seven to go, so I just got a good restart and hit my marks for the last seven laps.”

The Delaware Super Stock race was won by Brad Clark (#52) of Thedford.  Jared Shields (#7) of London led the opening nine laps, before being passed by Andrew Perkins (#3) of London.  Perkins would lead until being passed on lap seventeen by Clark and would finish third.  Jason Lidster (#11) of St. Thomas finished in second, leading to a solid points night when top points runner Darrell Lake (#77) of London suffered a mechanical failure on a restart.

“It was a great run,” said Clark in victory lane.  “I’m glad to be here.  It was great, I’m glad we have guys like that [Lidster] to race with.”

Dave Goertz (#15) of Arkona won the Transmission Direct Enduro 150-lap feature race on Saturday presented by South-End Truck Centre.  In the end of the event Goertz found himself on a lap of his own, with Jeff Coward (#11) of Ilderton running a lap behind in second.  Two laps behind the leader in third place was Jacob Orr (#41) of St. Thomas, fourth was Ed Jeffery (#9) of Appin, fifth was Norm Roy (#82).

“I guess all I want to do is apologize to #11 [Jeff Coward]” said Goertz in victory lane.  “I was trying to race hard, and he got a little loose.  He got in front of me just as I was trying to make a run.  I know I’ve had that happen, so I know how bad that feels.  Bad move on my part.”

Goertz’s success came at the expense of previous points leader David McCullough (#39) of Glencoe.  McCullough led the points coming into the day, but a late race crash in turn three caused him to not finish the event.  Goertz is the new unofficial points leader with McCullough trailing by just four points.

Blue Thunder (Gary Triska of Staffordville) won the Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Car race on Saturday.  The event saw a series of one-on-one qualifiers and finished with a one lap sprint around the course the with full field.  Blue Thunder made his winning pass on Wednesday (Jon Kok) in the turn one 360 barrel turn and was able to keep the competition off his bumper to take the win.

“No special strategy” said Triska in victory lane.  “I just tried to keep it fast.”

Following the Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos car race all the drivers from the class headed up onto the concourse for an autograph session.  A number of the drivers mixed it up by allowing young race fans who collected their autograph to put their signature on the cars themselves, adding some additional character to their racing machines and winning over some new fans at the same time.

The next racing event at Delaware Speedway is CPT Entertainment and Country Favourites BX93 night.  The racing line up features the APC Late Models in twin-25’s, the POWERADE Modifieds, Demar Aggregates Trucks as well as a Transmission Direct Enduro Challenge.  Gates open at 6:00 pm, time trials for the APC Late Models are at 7:30 pm, racing starts at 8:00 pm.
