Two Great Days of Racing

STILL GOT IT!  Al Patrick pushes the 02B to the edge during demonstration laps

Early day showers did not put a dampener on Delaware Speedway’s Vintage Night presented by AM1410 Great Songs, Great Memories.  The evening opened with a classic car cruise around the speedway, followed by the Nerds on Site parade lap, concluding with a vintage racecar demonstration by Al Patrick and his son Jim.

David McCullough won his first ever Delaware Speedway racing event Friday evening at Delaware Speedway.  McCullough started from the inside of the second row.  He passed Stephen Richmond (#24) of Appin and Tyler Hendricks (#38) of Pain Court on lap six.  Barry Newman (#1) of Springfield finished second closing in on McCullough in the final laps.  Stephen Richmond (#24) came home with a career best third-place finish.

“I didn’t know how to get here!  I guess I found my way,” joked McCullough in victory lane.  “We needed this.  We had a bad few weeks there and we deserved this I think.  We’ve been working hard and we got it here!”

Jim Mairs won the Delaware Speedway Super Stock race Friday evening.  Mairs started on the pole position and pulled out to a solid lead over the rest of the field, extending it throughout the event.  Second was Jason Lidster (#11) of London, third was Darrell Lake (#77) of London.

“I really have to thank my wife for letting me do this,” said Mairs in victory lane.  “I knew [Jason Lidster] was coming strong at the end.  I know I certainly wasn’t the fastest, but I’m working on it.

Mike Klotz of Cambridge won the Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modified feature race in his 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe.  Klotz took the lead on lap thirteen from Jeff Shaw (#81) of Grand Valley.  Mike Podd (#5) of Burlington finished second, third was Jason Keen (#18) of Oakville.

“It was getting looser and looser out there”, said Klotz.  “We’ve probably been here 3-4 times.  I want to thank my dad for his help.”

The Transmission Direct Enduro race on Saturday proved to be a thrilling affair.  The event became the third rain race the series has run in recent memory.  The Transmission Direct Enduro series is capable of running in the rain, and the fans were eager to see their heroes race each other and the conditions.

When the first heat started the track was reasonably dry, but several laps in the first wave of rain during racing conditions fell, initially slowing the field dramatically until drivers were able to adjust.  Piet Blaauboerr II would take the win in the first heat of the day.  The first heat also saw the debut of the first Next-Generation Enduro cars in the six-cylinder or less program.  Steve McCaw (#2x) and Justin Demelo (#82x) took to the track in their four-cylinder vehicles.  What surprised fans and competitors alike was not what the competitors were driving, but where they finished.  McCaw finished fourth and Demelo finished fifteenth out of the thirty-two cars in the first heat.  McCaw led many of the opening laps of the race.  In the second heat, Steve Book (#64) of Brantford would take the win.

In the ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Cars, Snotrod (Tyssen Toll) of London would take his second win in a row and his third of the season in the bone-stock obstacle based class.  Snotrod scored just two points more then his rival and current championship points leader, Bush Bomb (Spencer Rabideau) of Glencoe.  Following his victory, SnotRod parked his car against the wall performing a burnout.

“Honestly, I didn’t know I won.  There was a lot of smoke in the cockpit…  This thing smells like tires,” said Snotrod in victory lane.  “I want to thank Mark [Thyssen] for his help repairing the car.  It took all week, and took all week to fix the damage from our last wreck!  I want to thank my fans over here, and all the kids that are yellin’ for me right now!”

Following the interview Snotrod performed several victory donuts before returning to the infield.  Seven drivers took the course making the race was the largest one so far this year so far for the Chaos Cars and the second largest since the series was formed in 2008.

The Transmission Direct Enduro 150-Lap feature proved to be a rain-soaked affair, just as the heat races were.  When the checkers flew at the end, Dave Goertz (#15) of Thedford was the winner, several laps ahead of the next closest challenger. Jacob Orr (#41) of London finished a career-best second, third was Jamie Klumper (#07) of Mitchell, fourth was Barry Watson (#45) of London and fifth was David McCullough (#39) of Glencoe.  Steve Book (#64) of Glencoe was running quick near the end of the race, clawing his way up to second position before being forced to pit for mechanical problems.  He also had to pit early in the race, setting him off the pace.

RAIN RACE!  The Transmission Direct Enduro drivers battle the elements on Saturday night.

“I wasn’t the class of the field tonight,” said Goertz in victory lane.  “The class of the field was that #64, he made us look silly in the rain!  I really feel bad for the trouble he had.  My little brother (Don Goertz) was running second with ten [laps] to go before getting involved in turn one and two.”

Following post race inspection two penalties were issued by the Delaware Speedway technical committee:

“#41Jacob Orr and #07 Jamie Klumper were issued a $100 fine and 25 point deduction for running an unapproved wheel spacer.  It was not deemed an advantage, based on how the driver could have run a different offset wheel to attain the same effect, however under the rulebook spacers are not allowed.”

The two Next-Generation cars finished solidly as well.  Justin Demelo (#82x) finished twenty-seventh, McCaw (#2x) finished in fiftieth out of sixty-six cars.  McCaw had been running as high as fifteenth spot, before going to the infield following a crash in turn one.  Both drivers expressed how much they enjoyed themselves, and how they hope more drivers will join them in the six-cylinder or less ranks.  Both drivers picked up special prize bonuses reserved for cars in the Next-Generation format.

Top five drivers in victory lane...  The rain stopped just as the race ended.

The next time to see the drivers of the Transmission Direct Enduro is this Friday night in a 25-lap challenge format.  The evening, sponsored by Bedell’s Food Services and Siskinds the Lawfirm features the APC Late Models, Delaware Super Stocks and Demar Aggregates Trucks.  Gates open at 6:00 pm, racing starts at 8:00 pm.
