RACE RECAP: July 10, 2009
July 10, 2009 Steve Robblee's Winning Pass on Robbie Pyle of Chicago Illionis Steve Robblee won both races in the JBM Auto Leasing Triple Crown event Friday evening at Delaware Speedway in the APC Late Models. The evening was Glen Fenwick Subaru and SPDA-Online.ca night and proved to be a great evening full of excitement.
In the APC Late Model race Robbie Pyle was the leader early on, starting from the first position. With one lap in the books “Showtime” Steve Robblee (#28) of Dorchester was running second chasing Pyle. As the field came around to put lap two on the board, Jesse Kennedy (#10) of Southwold spun in turn four as a result of contact with Mark Watson (#02) of St. Thomas. On lap 7, Ron Sheridan (#52) was able to pass Steven Matthews (#15) of New Liskeard and Jonathan Urlin (#4) of London. As the raced approached lap ten, Robblee was able to get underneath Pyle and bring Sheridan along on the inside. Caution would fly once again for a crash involving Lloyd Rawlings (#69) of Windsor who hit the wall opening on the back straight. Rawlings was uninjured, but would not rejoin the race. As the race restarted, caution would fly once again for a crash at the front of the field involving Steven Matthews (#15) of New Liskeard, collecting a number of cars including Doug Stewart (#2) of London. As the race resumed Robblee and Sheridan pulled away from the main pack. The stage ended with Robblee as the winner, Sheridan in second and Pyle in third.
The pack went down pit road and came to a stop, preparing for their second race of the night. The second race began with the drivers in the same order they finished the first race. Mark Watson (#02) immediately set to work challenging Pyle on the high side for third position, but found himself fighting off Jonathan Urlin (#4) on the inside. Caution flew for a crash involving Marc Jacobs (#8) of London and Rick Emery (#14) of Ruscom. Robblee and Sheridan were again strong on the restart pulling away from the other challengers. Shortly after, Chad Rijnen (#3) of Thamesford would spin in turn two bringing out the yellow. On the restart Jon Urlin (#4) made contact with Pyle slowing both cars and allowing Mark Watson (#02) to jump to the high side and take third position. Urlin continued to put pressure on Pyle until Pyle spun in turn four with fourteen laps to go. Urlin was sent to the back of the field as an involved car. When the raced resumed, Sherdian stayed on Robbee’s bumper for the remainder of the race, but was not able to complete the pass.
“I’m wore out!” said Robblee in victory lane, after handing what he called a loose race car throughout the evening. “I love racing with Ronny [Sheridan]. I would do the same back for him. We always have good race.”
Second in the race was Ron Sheridan, third was Mark Watson (#02) of St. Thomas. Watson was the fastest driver in time trials earlier in the evening. He clocked in at a blistering 18.898 seconds. Jesse Kennedy rallied back from his early spin for a fourth place finish. Jamie Ramsay (#22) of London rounded out the top five.
The POWERADE Open-Wheel Modified event was won by Paul Shipway (#88) of Ailsa Craig. The division had a troubling first lap as John Saunders (#70) of London hit the outside wall off turn two and collected nearly every car in the field. Only three cars were able to avoid being involved in the crash. Shipway would move on to victory lane, but Jamie Cox (#3) of Dorchester came on strong near the end of the race, finishing right on Shipway’s bumper.
“I want to apologize to the fans on behalf of my class,” said Shipway in victory lane. “We don’t have a big car count and we wrecked the whole field coming out of two. I want to thank these fans for coming out. After [the crash], the car came together and I was able to run away. Jamie was coming, but ran out of laps.”
The Demar Aggregates Truck event was a thrilling one off the start. In turn two Bill McDonald Jr (#97) of London got sideways bunching the field up from third on back. The result was by the time the field got to turn three they were three wide throughout the pack. At the same time, Gary Kirschner (#11) of London had a mechanical failure at the front of the field and dove into the pits forcing McDonald to come with him. Further, in the midst of the melee Jeff Showler (#56) of Mt. Elgin hit the pit road tire. All drivers were able to get their cars righted and avoid the yellow. Lonny Thompson (#4) of Dorchester led the opeing laps before being passed by Sid McDonald (#33) of London. McDonald would win the event, Jordan Dupuis (#75) finished second, third was Justin Demelo (#82) of London. Derek Clark (#7) of Strathroy finished in a solid fourth position and rookie Michelle Koricina (#99) of Ailsa Craig continued to impress with her fifth place finish.
“We thought we were a little loose going in [to the night],” said McDonald in victory lane. “I thought I would keep the truck the same way was it was. I figured the truck would get tighter as the night got colder, and you know what - - it worked out for us.”
Another highlight for the Demar Aggregate trucks was Kathleen Hosang (#16) of Zurich winning her first ever heat race. It was Hosang’s first career victory.
The Throne King’s Powder Puff Madness event was won by Marcie Lochrie of London. Lochrie won the opportunity to participate in a separate ladies-only race using borrowed cars. The event was presented by Ofner’s Auto Sales, Cathcart Auto Parts, A Daizy Limousine Services and Whitworth Towing.
The Throne King’s of the Hill Spectators race with $1000 to win was won by The $1000 to win was presented by Glen Fenwick Subaru, SPDA-Online.ca and Custom Auto Care of Sarnia. The event was won by a silver Subaru driven by John from Toronto, beating out a previous winner, Ken’s black Mustang. Both drivers were experiencing some mechanical difficulties in the final round, but were able to overcome them to run the best two out of three finale. Over 36 drivers arrived to compete in the special event.
The next race event is Vintage Night on Friday, July 17 sponsored by AM1410 and presented by Nerds on Site and Country Corners Rent-all. The next day on July 18 is the Transmission Direct Enduro and Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Cars.
