To the delight of fans, Kevin Overholt successfully launched himself and his Crown Victoria through a set of parked RV’s Friday evening at Delaware Speedway. The jump, which took place on Newstalk 1290 CJBK night was picture perfect and, short of a broken windshield, left his vehicle in surprisingly good condition, however both trailers were completely destroyed by the impact.

“That was a hoot, I love it,” said Overholt after emerging from the vehicle. “I could do this every day.”

Overholt will have his chance to do it once more this season. The next jump is scheduled for the Transmission Direct Enduro Nationals on Saturday, September 26. That jump will use a V6 Mustang to achieve the speed necessary for the next feat.

In the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series weekly divisions, Paul Shipway (#88) of Ailsa Craig won the POWERADE Open-Wheel Modifieds. David McCullough (#39) of Glencoe led much of the race, before approaching lapped traffic. Shipway was able to get underneath McCullough in traffic to complete a pass. McCullough ended up with a fifth place finish. Barry Newman (#1) of Springfield was second, third was Jamie Cox (#3) of Dorchester. Upon arriving in victory circle, Shipway handed a surprise to trackside announcer Chris Soares: the gearshift for his car.

“I don’t know when it fell out,” said Shipway in victory lane. “The caution came out and I looked down and my gearshift was sitting in my lap! We had good luck, getting around the lapped car there was a lane in there so we got in there. It was a good win I think.”

Rookie driver Steve Smith (#84) of Arkona won the Delaware Super Stock feature race Friday evening. Although a rookie, Smith is no stranger to Delaware Speedway, having enjoyed success in previous years in the Transmission Direct Enduro Series. Jim Mairs (#5) of London was out front early on in the 25-lap event. As the race wore on, Mairs and Smith found themselves separated from the rest of the pack. Smith was able to successfully complete a pass on Mairs for the win. Second was Jim Mairs (#5) of London, third was Kris Lawrence (#28) of London.

The win was a sombre one for Smith and his crew who had a special dedication following the race:

“I want to dedicate this race to a friend we lost this year,” said Smith. “Steve Burdan - - we’re going to miss him, lots. We usually see him once a week, but not anymore.”

Following the race, a tech inspection note was issued:

As a result of the post race inspection on Friday July 3, 2009 Delaware Super Stock #11 (Jason Lidster) was found to be in violation of the following rule: “An operational 6300 rpm chip must be installed”. The chip found in the car did not meet operational specifications. When the rev limiter was inspected, it was found to be operation. The chip, however, was found to be .11 Ohm out of spec. Although a very small amount, it was in violation of the rulebook. The RPM chip or “Rev Chip” puts a cap on the RPM the engine can generate. As a result of the infraction the team has been fined one hundred dollars ($100.00), and a deducted twenty five (25) driver points and twenty five (25) owner points. No formal appeal was filed by the team.

The Demar Aggregates Trucks ran caution free on Friday evening. Rookie driver Michelle Koricina (#99) of Ailsa Craig impressed again this week when she took the lead within a few laps of the green flag. Shortly after she fell to the charges of defending champion Paul Fothergill (#88) of London (see video). Following the pass, Koricina would shuffle back slightly to a respectable sixth place finish. Second was Shawn Johns (#00) of St. Marys, third was Jeff Showler (#56) of Mt. Elgin.

“It was really good, but was a little loose there,” said Fothergill in victory lane. “Just had to hang onto it! It was really good.”

The Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Car race was won by SnotRod, after he scored the most Chaos points in the event format. The race was full of the usual action fans have come to expect from the Chaos Cars. Each Chaos Car had a flat tire following the wild event. When Tyssen Toll, driver of the SnotRod was asked where he picked up the flat he replied: “I don’t know - - and I don’t care!”

Following the Chaos Cars, Strongman Len Elliott performed feats of strength on the front straightaway. The feats included lifting over 700 lbs, and pulling a pair of trucks down the front stretch. The feats were to raise awareness for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

The next race event at Delaware Speedway is this Friday, July 10 a $1,000 to win Throne Kings of the Hill Spectator Race presented by Glen Fenwick Subaru, Spda-online.ca and Custom Auto Care. There will also be a separate event called Powderpuff Madness in which the winners of a draw held in previous weeks will be competing in a special format using donated cars prior to the Throne King’s of the Hill race. The Powderpuff Madness event is presented by Ofner’s Auto Sales, Cathcart Auto Parts, A Daizy Limousine Services and Whitworth Towing. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions will be out in force with a JBM AutoLeasing Triple Crown race, POWERADE Modifieds and Demar Aggregates Trucks will also be competing. Gates open at 6:00 pm, time trials are at 7:30 pm, and racing starts at 8:00 pm.
