LYNCH WINS LIGHTNING SHORTENED ENDURO April 25, 2009 John Houghton Delaware Speedway PR CLICK HERE FOR CFM EVENT PHOTO GRALLERY John Lynch (#4) of Blenheim won the historic opening event of the Next Generation Transmission Direct Enduro Saturday afternoon at Delaware Speedway. Second was David McCullough (#39) of Glencoe, Jim Ferguson (#06) of Essex was third, Derek McCullough of Glencoe was fourth, and fifth was Jeff Coward (#11) of Ilderton. All drivers in the top five finished within two laps of each other in the 150-lap event which was shortened to 100 laps after severe lightning storms moved in on the speedway. Although Transmission Direct Enduro events can normally run in rain, severe lightning can cause changes to the program in the interests of both spectators and competitors. Podium presentations were kept short because of the fast moving weather system. A brief presentation is tentatively scheduled to take place before the start of the next event on Saturday, May 16 to recognize the top drivers from the race. Second place driver David McCullough won his 30-lap heat race earlier in the afternoon. After a thrilling multi-lap duel with his brother and on-track rival Derek McCullough, David was able to take the lead position in his Camaro. Derek finished as runner up, with Jim Ferguson (#06) of Essex in tow. The second heat race saw the “Mean Green #15” of Dave Goertz of Arkona in victory lane, but it proved to be no easy task to get there. Goertz had to fend off attacks from former Demar Aggregates truck champion “The Black Knight” Paul Fothergill (#7) of London. The pair made contact on a number of occasions and were also joined by Jeff Coward (#11) of Ilderton. The Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Cars took to the track in the middle of the day. The event was won by the same driver who won the final event last year, “Bush Bomb” Spencer Rabideau of Glencoe. The final lap was a side-by-side duel with “Red Baron” (Mike Kilgore of London) leading into the third turn before “Bush Bomb” was able to slide under the baron in turn 3. Moments later “Red Baron” was spun by “Wrinkles II” (Jake Truax of Komoka) securing the victory for Bush Bomb. The 2008 defending Champion, “Snot Rod” (Tyssen Toll of London) suffered mechanical problems and was not able to complete the entire Chaos Course. The event also saw the introduction of the surprisingly scrappy “Blue Thunder” driven by Gary Triska of Staffordville who won the approval of fans with a gutsy charge into a 360 barrel turn that caught his opposition very much by surprise. The next Transmission Direct Enduro event is Saturday, May 16 at 2:00 pm. The afternoon event also features the Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Cars. Pit gates open at 11:00 am, spectator gates at 1:00 pm.
The next racing at Delaware Speedway is this Friday, May 1 with the Debut of the historic debut NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. Racing will feature the APC Late Models, Delaware Super Stocks, and Demar Trucks. The event is being held in support of Jesse’s Journey. Spectator gates open at 6:00 pm, racing starts at 8:00 pm. Spectators who are at the facility between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm will be able to take advantage of the speedway’s popular two-for-one hotdog offer at the concession stand.
