VERHOEVEN TAKES THE WIN!

Dion Verhoeven (#77) of Kerwood won the APC Late Model feature race Friday evening at Delaware Speedway.  Scott Lindsay led until lap 10 when he was passed by Rocket Ron Sheridan (#52) of Mt. Brydges.  It was soon revealed that Sheridan had a tire that was slowly losing air.  Sheridan would hold onto the lead until lap 26 when he was passed by Verhoeven.  Sheridan would slide back to eleventh position.  Second in the event was Jonathan Urlin (#4) of London and third was Scott Lindsay (#20) of St. Marys.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Verhoeven in victory lane.  “We’ve had a good car a couple times.  We’ve been getting ready for the APC 300, and the car is pretty good right now!”

The Peterbilt of Ontario Super Stock feature race was won by Jim Mairs (#5) of London.  Mairs led the entire event with Don Dadson (#1) of Union close behind and Jeremiah Rabideau (#51) of Glencoe in tow.  On lap 22 Mairs and Rabidau would fall back allowing Scott Nagy (#99) of London to make a charge on the lead.  Nagy came on strong at the end but ran out of laps.  Mairs held on for the win with Nagy in second, third was Jason Lidster (#11) of St. Thomas.

“I’ll tell you, the last time I stood here in victory lane with a feature win was September of 1993,” said Mairs in Victory Lane.  “It feels great to be back.  I did this of the over [age] 50 guys!”

Mairs also expressed gratitude toward Bob Hewitt, saying that without Bob the car would not be at Delaware racing.  Next Friday is a benefit night for Hewitt who was recently diagnosed  with Leukemia.

The Challenger Motor Freight Truck race saw Tom Zagorodny (#77) of London return to victory lane for the second time in 2008.  Zagorodny took the lead on lap eight from John Walzak (#4) of London.  It was a tough night for points leader Paul Fothergill (#9) of London who was held on pit lane twice during the event for on-track infractions.  Second place points runner Chad Rijnen (#33) of London took full advantage of the opportunity to make up ground on the leader.  Rijnen was as high as second in the event, before moving into third after being passed by Jeff Showler of Mt. Elgin.  Showler finished second, Rijnen third.

In a race that is as much fun to talk about as it was to watch, the Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Cars rounded out the evening with their own special brand of…  Chaos.  After bumping and banging their way around the Chaos Course for ten laps the checkers flew.  Fred initially appeared to be the winner of the event until video replay (and boos from the turn one hill) that, in spite of Fred’s protests revealed that he did not complete the final 360 degree barrel turn.  The win fell to “O.P.P.” and Fred was booted from victory lane.  As it turns out, “O.P.P.” hadn’t won any popularity points in the race either with some fans insisting that he drove too hard and insisting that the “true” winner was either “Kramer” or “Red Baron”.  With rivalries and tensions between the competitors growing the Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Cars will return to action on Sunday, August 31 at the APC 300 where they will take place in an event fittingly called “FACEOFF”.
